The Mazda RX-7 FD3S (1991 to 2002) is the third-generation RX-7, and it is the car most buyers mean when they search for a JDM rotary. Its 13B-REW engine uses two turbochargers in sequence, and it runs a 1.3-litre rotary that makes more power than its size suggests. The price of a clean example has climbed, and many cars on the market now need work that the seller did not mention.
Most buyers want one of three things: a legal route to bring a Japanese-market RX-7 into their country, a car that will hold its value, or a platform for a build. The FD3S serves the second and third goals well. The first depends on the rules of your market and the car's build date.
Which RX-7 should you buy?
The FD3S is the one to start with if you want a rotary sports car with a light body and a balanced chassis. The earlier FC3S (1985 to 1991) is cheaper and lighter in some respects, but it is a different car with a different engine, the 13B-T, and it is not the focus of this guide.
Japanese-market FD3S cars were rated under the voluntary industry cap. Early cars were rated at 255 PS, and later cars at 280 PS. Rated figures differ by year and trim, so check the factory specification for the exact car rather than an advertised number.
Which FD3S trims show up in listings?
- Type R and Type RS: the trim names you will see most often on used cars from 1991 to 2002. Trim content varies by year and market, so match the car to its factory specification rather than the name alone.
- Spirit R (2002): the final-year special edition, with strong collector demand and a price to match.
Trim naming changed during the run, so use the chassis number and export paperwork to confirm the exact specification.
Is an FD3S legal to import to the United States?
Under the US 25-year exemption, a vehicle at least 25 years old can be imported without meeting federal safety standards, and the age is counted from the date of manufacture. As of October 2026, FD3S cars built up to October 2001 meet the age test, which covers most of the 1991 to 2001 cars. Cars built in 2002, including Spirit R examples, do not yet qualify. The importer declares the car on Form HS-7 under Box 1, according to NHTSA's importation FAQ. That page does not show an effective or last-updated date, so confirm the build date before you buy.
Emissions are a separate question under EPA rules, and state registration varies. Check your state DMV before you buy, since California (CARB) is the strictest.
What could go wrong with an FD3S?
Rotary engines need regular attention, and many problems come from neglect rather than design. Ask for compression and leak-down readings, and check for oil consumption, since a worn engine burns oil before it fails. Overheating is the most common cause of rotary damage, so check the coolant system and the radiator closely.
Look at the apex seals and the engine history. A car that has had a recent rebuild should come with receipts that name the work. Check the rear quarter panels and the sills for rust, and read the auction sheet grade guide to understand what the inspector's notes mean.
Turbo and wastegate work is common on modified cars, so ask whether the boost level has been raised. A car tuned beyond its factory boost is not necessarily unsafe, but it needs a closer inspection.
Who should buy an FD3S?
Buy an FD3S if you want a rotary car with analog feedback and can accept the maintenance. If you want a modern sports car with lower running costs, look elsewhere, because the rotary will cost more to keep healthy.

Frequently asked questions
Is the FD3S RX-7 reliable?
It can be, when the engine is well maintained. Regular oil changes, cooling system care, and a documented service history matter more than the odometer.
Can I import an FD3S RX-7 to the US now?
As of October 2026, FD3S cars built up to October 2001 meet the 25-year age test. Confirm the build date from the chassis plate or export paperwork.
How much does a rotary rebuild cost?
Costs depend on the shop and the parts used, so get a written quote from a rotary specialist before you commit. Check the engine's condition before you pay the purchase price.
What is the difference between the FD3S and the FC3S?
The FC3S is the earlier generation with the 13B-T engine. The FD3S has the twin-turbo 13B-REW and a different body and chassis.
Disclaimer: Rules change. Confirm with your national registry or customs authority before buying. The US age test was checked against NHTSA on 2026-10-23.
