The Nissan Silvia S15 (1999 to 2002) is the last of the Silvia coupes sold in Japan, and it shares its SR20DET turbo engine and rear-wheel-drive chassis with the 180SX hatchback. The Spec R is the car most enthusiasts mean when they say S15. It is a drift and track favourite, and its popularity has pushed prices well above what a standard car is worth.

Most buyers want one of three things: a legal way to bring a Japanese-market Silvia or 180SX home, a rear-drive coupe for weekends, or a base for a build. The S15 suits all three, but the import question depends on the exact build date, and that is the first thing to check.

Silvia S15 or 180SX: which should you buy?

The S15 Silvia is the coupe, and the 180SX is the hatchback sibling built on the older S13 platform, sold in Japan from 1989 to 1998. The 180SX has a classic hatchback shape and is often the cheaper way into SR20DET power. The S15 has a more modern chassis and a stiffer body. Buy the S15 if you want the later platform and the Spec R trim, and buy a 180SX if budget or the hatchback look matters more.

The Spec R was rated at 250 PS under the voluntary Japanese cap. Standard S15 cars were rated lower, so check the factory sheet for the exact trim before you rely on a figure.

Is an S15 Silvia legal to import to the United States?

Under the US 25-year exemption, a vehicle at least 25 years old can be imported without meeting federal safety standards, and the age runs from the date of manufacture. As of October 2026, S15 cars built up to October 2001 meet the age test, and S15s built later in 2001 and in 2002 do not yet qualify. The 180SX and S13 cars built before October 2001 pass the age test as a group. The importer declares the car on Form HS-7 under Box 1, according to NHTSA's importation FAQ. That page does not show an effective or last-updated date, so confirm the build date before buying.

Emissions and state registration are separate questions, so check your state DMV before buying.

What could go wrong with an S15 or 180SX?

Many of these cars have been drifted, raced, or modified heavily. Ask for records of every change, including the turbo, injectors, and ECU, and check the drivetrain for worn differentials and clutch damage. A car with a worn differential or a failing clutch can cost more to repair than the price difference suggests.

Check the SR20DET for oil leaks around the turbo oil feed and the valve cover. Look at the body for rust in the rear arches, the sills, and the front subframe mounts, and read the auction sheet grade guide before you rely on any inspection note.

Crash damage is common on these cars, and a poor repair can hide frame damage. Check panel gaps and paint thickness, and ask for a pre-purchase inspection from a shop that knows the chassis.

Who should buy an S15 or 180SX?

Buy an S15 if you want a rear-drive coupe with strong modification potential and can pay for careful upkeep. Buy a 180SX if you want a lower-cost entry with a hatchback body. Either car rewards a driver who checks the basics before adding power.

Frequently asked questions

Is the S15 Silvia worth the premium price for a Spec R?

Spec R cars sell for more than standard cars, and the gap depends on condition and mileage. A clean standard car often gives more driving per dollar.

Can I import an S15 to the US now?

Only S15s built up to October 2001 meet the 25-year age test as of October 2026. Confirm the build date from the chassis plate or export paperwork.

Is the 180SX a good first project?

It can be, if you accept that rust and drivetrain wear will set the budget. Start with the most solid body you can find.

Does the SR20DET need a rebuild?

Not automatically. Compression, leak-down, and oil consumption tests tell you more than the odometer.

Disclaimer: Rules change. Confirm with your national registry or customs authority before buying. The US age test was checked against NHTSA on 2026-10-23.
